The French engineer Henri Fayol divided managerial work into five categories: (1) Forecasting and planning, (2) Building organizations and systems, (3) Directing subordinates, (4) Co-ordinating various activities across the business, and (5) Guiding these activities so that all parts of the business are working towards the same end.
