What exactly do managers do on a day-to-day basic?
The French engineer Henri Fayol divided managerial work into five categories:
(1) Forecasting and planning,
(2) Building organizations and systems,
(3) Directing subordinates,
(4) Co-ordinating various activities across the business, and
(5) Guiding these activities so that all parts of the business are working towards the same end.

One of the most famous management writers, the American Peter Drucker, also provides five categories:
(1) Setting objectives,
(2) Organizing,
(3) Motivating and communicating,
(4) Measurement of work accomplished and
(5) Developing people.
